Basic Monthly Residential Collection Rate
As of July 1, 2009, the basic monthly rate for the weekly collection of a 32-gallon container is $25.48. Collection rates are set to encourage recycling. The monthly collection charge is based on the black (garbage) cart. The blue and green carts are picked up at no additional charge. If you recycle enough to consistently reduce your weekly garbage volume to 20-gallons or less, you will be eligible for a 23% discount off the standard 32-gallon can rate.

Discounted Mini-can Rate
The mini-can rate is designed for customers who generate 20-gallons or less of refuse every week. Customers who recycle all of their paper, bottles and cans in the blue cart, and compost their yard waste and food trimmings in the green cart are more likely to qualify for the 20-gallon can rate. Other ways to minimize the amount going into your garbage cart is to reduce and reuse.

A 23% discount from the standard weekly rate for 32-gallon service is offered to customers who qualify. During the period of July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, the charges per month are $25.48 for a standard 32-gallon can and $19.62 for the discounted 20-gallon mini-can. Recycle more and pay less!

Lifeline Rate for Low-Income Residents
In San Francisco, low-income households may be eligible for a 25% discount on their basic garbage collection rate. Depending on household size and total annual income, your household may be eligible for the new discounted rate.

The discounted rates, called "Lifeline Rates", are in effect now. For the July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010 rate year the Lifeline rates approved by the Rate Board are: $19.11 per month for households that use a 32-gallon cart for garbage and $14.71 per month for households that recycle enough to require only a 20-gallon cart for garbage. All households receive the same high-quality garbage collection and recycling service, regardless of the rate they pay.

San Francisco's garbage collection rates are designed to enable the city to meet State-mandated recycling and waste reduction requirements. Collection of recyclables is included in all residential service at no extra charge.

The new rate will appear on your next bill after we receive your completed and signed application and your eligibility is confirmed.
